Webinar: The Global Citizens’ Initiative
The Global Citizens’ Initiative (TGCI) is a US-based organization with an effort to build a network of people who see themselves as global citizens and want to build a better world. The organization’s aim is to help build the global citizenship skills and capacities of individuals, governments, NGOs, and businesses. They strengthen the ability of individuals and organizations to act as global citizens in their communities, countries, and across the world. They help build the global citizenship skills needed to solve world issues such as human rights, gender equity, the environment, sustainable development, poverty, and global peace and justice. Such a network responds to an urgent need for better grass-roots mechanisms that engage people in the processes of advocating for global values, finding global solutions to global issues, and building more participatory global governance institutions.
According to Ron Israel, TGCI’s founder and director, “A global citizen is someone who identifies with being a part of an emerging world community, and whose actions contribute to building this community’s values and practices.” (Global Citizenship: A Path to Building Identity and Community in a Globalized World, Ron Israel, 2011)
