📚 Imagine that suddenly one day, you wake up and discover that everything you knew about your life was just a lie. What would you do? When The Whistler Calls by Carla Day tells about Rosie Morgan, a woman experienced this nightmare period after her husband’s mortal accident and tried to find a mysterious man called The Whistler. Let’s learn more about this story through an interview with the author.

HCX: Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

Carla: I’m a keen hiker, an avid reader, an obsessive writer and I also love anything to do with lemons. Strange but true. I’ve loved the taste and smell since I was small. I have a Jack Russel called Lilly. A smart and handsome son, and a very understanding partner. I love camping too!

I found my love for writing after my son was born. I used to read the same stories to him, over and over and got really bored. I decided to have a go at writing some and he loved them. But I never thought about getting them published. I did enroll in a creative writing course, though, with: The Writers Bureau and studied writing for TV, Radio and Novel writing. I continued to write from then. All sorts. A fantasy novel, as it was around the time JK Rowling had written her books. I wrote magic realism books and a romantic comedy. However, my favourite genre to write and read is without a doubt, gripping thrillers that keep you guessing.

HCX: What inspired you to write this novel?

Carla: Simply, the area I live in. It’s so atmospheric and there are a large number of abandoned asylums. I won’t give too much away. But scouring the cliff tops and valleys of Wales was very creepy and inspiring.

HCX: Where did the material/inspiration for the When the Whistler Calls come from?

Carla: Same as above, really. The characters are all one hundred percent fictional, so I thought. Until I read the story back and found some traits of people I knew. Subconsciously I’d borrowed parts of people. But they’ll never know who they are, so that’s cool. I also watched a fab BBC drama and thought I would like to write something similar, but much darker.

HCX: How would you feel if you happened to be in a situation similar to Rosie’s and “everything you knew about your life turned out to be a lie”?

Carla: I’d be terrified. To be in a state of constant paranoia and panic must be hell. I would not like to be in her shoes, especially at the end. Shh… No spoilers.

HCX: Could you tell readers a little bit about Rosie Morgan, the Whistler?

Carla: Well… Rosie is a complex character. Partly lovable. Partly vulnerable. Partly scary. Her sketchy past is the cause of her current state of Paranoia. After the trauma of losing her husband, and discovering he had a secret life, she begins to have flashbacks to a time she had previously blocked out. And for good reason – again, no spoilers. Her best friend is her only ally and helps her investigate his devious past, but Rosie becomes suspicious of her friend’s sincerity. Rosie has a lot to consider and becomes wary.

That’s when The Whistler appears in her nightmares. He has an intimidating and sinister presence. But, she has no choice, other than to keep revisiting her dreams, in order to find out the truth of her past. It’s not a pretty picture. But it’s not the ending you think it’s going to be either. I can’t give more away than that. Apart from, let’s say, Rosie has psychological issues, or does she?

HCX: Thank you for participating in the interview. We wish you all the best with your new book!
